The new strategic research areas of Communication Engineering Division would focus on two areas:

Lightwave Communications :
The focus is on the development of novel optical system architectures and enabling network technologies, which would allow us to exploit the huge bandwidth of optical fibres and other optical components. These result in high-capacity optical core and access networks, advanced optical switching systems, advanced transmission systems, and optical fibre-based devices and systems.

Wireless Networks
:
Wireless networks consist of wireless metropolitan area networks (i.e., cellular and WiMax networks), wireless local area networks (i.e., wireless LANs and ad hoc networks), wireless personal area networks (i.e., medium-range sensor networks) and wireless body area networks (i.e, short-range sensor networks). The management of all these networks together is a real challenge. Integrating lightwave communications with wireless networks, it will revolutionize the way we live, work and interact. In particular, it will create possible solutions to health-care and aging problems.
